Obituary for Lena L. Hopfer

Lena L. Hopfer
Lena Louise Hopfer was born to Otto and Dora (Carsten) Klotz on October 30, 1912, in Phillipsburg, Kansas, where she lived until 1934 before coming to Omak. There she met a handsome young man named Arno Hopfer and 3 months later they were married. In 1945 they moved to Tonasket where they co-owned and operated a hardware store until returning to Omak in 1954. Lena packed apples at local warehouses for years. She retired from Mid-Valley Hospital after 11 years in the dietary dept. Her favorite hobbies were knitting and gardening. She was active in Tonasket, Omak and Okanogan Garden Clubs and was a certified national flower show judge. She also served on the Omak Parks Planning Committee. She was known as a wonderful cook and baker, specializing in her much requested butterhorns. She loved to travel and always had a map handy. Lena remained mentally sharp and was interested in world events and solving Sudoku puzzles. In 2001 she moved to Colonial Vista in Wenatchee. She had a strong Christian faith and her greatest hope would be that her family and friends also believe that “Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life” (John 14:6). She had been a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Tonasket, Trinity Lutheran Church in Omak and currently Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in East Wenatchee. Lena was an amazing lady and brought fun and much happiness to all her family. She was very loved and will be greatly missed! She was preceded in death by her husband, Arno, in 1977; her son, Thomas, in 2007; 2 brothers and 3 sisters. She is survived by daughter, Jane and husband, Tom Watson, of East Wenatchee; 5 grandchildren – Sherri (Mike) Wright of Issaquah, Lisa (Norm) Bontje of Seattle, Eric (Paige) Hopfer of Tokeland, Kelly Shumate of Aberdeen and Kurt (Brenda) Hopfer of Bend, Oregon; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in East Wenatchee on Friday, September 9 at 10:00 am. Following will be a brief graveside service at Omak Memorial Cemetery at 3:30. Memorial gifts may be made in Lena’s name to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 1050 Eastmont Avenue, East Wenatchee, WA 98802. Telford’s Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.
