Obituary for Fred Davis "Tink" Smith

Fred Davis “Tink” Smith
Born May 25, 1920 LaCrosse, AR. Died Oct 2, 2017 Wenatchee, WA.
Raised on the family farm growing cotton, corn and caring for livestock. Fred drove a mule team and repaired farm equipment. His nickname “Tink” came from tinkering with machinery.
Fred spent six months in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Pierce, ID and Metaline Falls, WA. He worked on road construction. His conduct was rated as “very good”.
Fred joined the Army Medical Service Corps on Dec 4, 1941. As a Tech 4 medical technician he was a wardmaster at the 371st Station Hospital in Ramgarh, India. He supervised five hospital orderlies in their duties. He treated patients according to the Ward Doctor’s order. He was held in high regard by the medical staff. He received a Bronze Star with 2 oakleaf clusters, Good Conduct, American Defense, and Asia Pacific Service medals.
Fred married Mary Lou Sipe on October 28, 1952. He helped build Alcoa and worked in the orchards including the first planting of the Ox Team Orchard. He went to work at the Keokuk silicon plant in Rock Island where he stayed until his retirement at age 70.
Fred loved to hunt and fish. He did both until his body told him no. He looked forward every fall to his weeklong elk hunting trip with his son Jim and friends. He took his kids fishing. He made friends easily and often.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, 3 brothers, and 2 sisters. He is survived by his children Judy Brown (Jim), Jim Smith (Becky), Ruth Miller (Jim) and Sharon Waterhouse (Dan). His grandchildren are Justin Brown (Lexie), Joni Rodriguez (Ed), Jeni Alrich (Rick), Julie Hunter (Ian), Brandon Smits (Brie), April Smits, Madison Miller, Hannah (Seth) Veteto, who took him grocery shopping and to haircuts, Sarah Waterhouse, Becca Waterhouse, Josh Waterhouse, Abigail Waterhouse and Lily Waterhouse. His great grandchildren are Colt and Lucy Brown, Olivia Ramirez, Jillian, Rhemi, and Scarlett Rodriguez, Luke and Logan Hakensen, Callihan, Bennett and Emerson Hunter, Aliya, Addyson and Jayson Smits and Nathaniel Veteto due in November. He is also survived by his brother Clyde of Batesville, Arkansas.

Private graveside services with military honors were held Thursday, October 5th at Evergreen Memorial Park in East Wenatchee. Arrangements are by Telford’s Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee, WA
